    Icon5 Recommendation Please?

So I have an offer on a Asm G3 Skimmer. They will sell and ship to me for $110 and it comes with a marineland NJ4500 pump instead of the stock sedra 5000 ( supposedly an upgrade ).

My question is do you think it would be overkill on my 125 setup? Its rated for max of 250. I do always over feed my tank so I would say my bioload is high.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated, thanks.

I've seen a 12" diam by 24" ETS skimmer with 2 pumps on a 55gal tank before. The difference was it got rid of all the green algae and they hardly had to clean the glass. I would say you'll be fine.

+1 for you'll be fine.... one question though, The Sedra 5000 is a monster. I have one on my 150G broodstock system and it's great. Is the Marineland NJ4500 really an upgrade?

i ran an ASM G2 on my 120 for over a year. I thought it was fine because it was rated to up to 250 gallons. I got about a cup - 1.5 cups of pretty dry skim a week.

The Sedra3500 pump went out (a second time) and i decided to upgrade because i recently added 100 gallons to the system. I decided on the Reef Octo NW200. It is twice the size and has the same rating as the ASM. It is my opinion that the ASM skimmers WAY!!!!!!!!!!! over rate the performance of their equipment. My new skimmer takes out +/- 3cups of dry skim every 4 or 5 days.

You might find that the G3 is just right for your tank with heavy feeding. It has the 6.5" reaction chamber same as a Reef Octo NWB 150 (very common and popular). Reef Octo rates this 6" body skimmer at 125 gallons medium load. New in the box from salty supply in orlando these are $224.

Choosing a new skimmer for me was a challenge. Spent a lot of time on the forums researching.

    Good luck with yours!

I run an ASM G-3 on my 150 gallon FOWLR...it works great! It's been going strong for 5+ years on a very heavy bioload. I do have the Sedra pump on mine, though, so I can't comment on the different pump.

While I'm sure there are better skimmers out there, the ASM gives so much "bang for your buck."

I agree with the rest...I think it would be great on your system.

    Eh, can't edit my post.

Check your local Grainger for the gate valve. They can be had for less than $25, vs getting from BRS at $50

Yes, agree with Randy...definitely get a gate valve!

I started without one, and was quite impressed when I added one. It makes adjusting the skimmer much, much easier.

    Congrats on the new skimmer!

When I re did my pluming got a decent value on fittings from "PVC fittings online". They carry both high end valves and Cheops.

Problem is animals keep using it as there water closet.
Worst of all the littlest ones keep using up all the supplies.
