    Purple Mushroom Casualty.

I got my frags home last night, looked them over them and found that my Purple Mushroom was torn from the frag disk, barely holding on by a thread. I'm not familiar enough with them to know if this is a catastrophe or not. I have him out of the way in a cave type spot so he's not getting kicked around by the current and the light isn't directed at him. Any suggestions?

I got a purple mushroom frag too, and its off the plug too. Will try the rubber band approach, hope it will work.

Sometimes it's tough to get a slimy mushroom to stay under a rubberband...if you find that to be the case, you can use bridal veil (or another fine mesh) and hold the mushroom to the plug by covering the whole thing tightly with the mesh. Mushrooms are pretty tough, it should re-attach in a few days and be fine.

    Hope this helps!

It's completely separated from the frag disk now, and it's difficult to find a spot that doesn't cause it to blow around like a tumbleweed right now. It seems to have settled in the substrate, pushed against a piece of live rock. I'm hoping it likes that spot, it's under an overhang, so it's getting less than nominal light and a significant decrease in flow. Maybe it'll attach to the live rock it's pressed up against and start spreading. Of my first six corals, I'm sure I'll have at least one that has problems, but I'm banking on the fact that this is Blizzard's tank, so maybe it'll be blessed with her luck and my ability to survive.

You can use some tulle from wallmart to hold it in place, and the mushroom will attach itself... usually softies like mushrooms and toadstool don't take well to any other methods but will gladly attach to any rock as long as you hold them in place fro a while...

Another idea, and one that's worked for me, is to use a plastic bin (like what strawberries come in) - set it on the sand with a bit of gravel in the bottom. The mushroom won't blow away, and will attach to something which you can then move around or glue to an even bigger rock. You'll have to put some sort of mesh over the top (I use tulle) to prevent it from blowing out. Shrooms are very tough - in fact, people bemoan that they are hard to kill should they take over.

I tucked him into a little nook in a piece of LR (after moving him and having him blown across the tank several times consecutively) and for the last few days he's stayed there. He has pulled himself up to cover the opening and it looks like he likes his new home.

For the sake of an update...

My Purple Mushroom has stayed in her nook, and she is probably the most expressive coral I have! I know exactly how she is feeling at any given time, because she has such exaggerated emotes! Weird... seeing a coral move so fast! She will scrunch up, spread herself wide and proud, and anything in between along with combinations of both. The other day I made a splendiforous discovery! She had a Baby! There is a small purple mushroom inside the cave she has taken residence in, she scrunched up into a ball for a few minutes and I saw the baby shroom a little past her! I'm not sure how well it'll do being completely cut off from the light, but she has gotten that big so far, so who knows!

Ought to do just fine. There will probably be quite a few before much longer.

    Congrats!
